Fort Bend Education Foundation Gala

The 16th annual Fort Bend Education Foundation Gala titled “In the Jungle” will be held at the Sugar Land Marriott Hotel on February 28, 2009. The reception will begin at 6:30 pm and dinner will be served at 8:00 pm. This exceptional event will take you on a jungle safari right here in Sugar Land.

“In the Jungle” is presented by Fort Bend Mechanical and promises to be an evening to remember. This distinctive event will celebrate the successes of the Fort Bend Education Foundation and thank the community for its generous support.

“In the jungle, the mighty jungle, the lion sleeps tonight”. You definitely won’t be sleeping through the lively live auction! Perhaps an evening of music and bulls sounds like a great time to you. If so, you can bid on the eight lower level tickets to the Jonas Brothers at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo! Got country music flowing through your veins? Visit Nashville and experience true country – the shows, the music, the food. Is the California wine country more your thing? Visit several vineyards, relax in your beautiful accommodations and enjoy the wine. Who’s throwing out the first pitch of an Astro’s game? It could be you, your son or your daughter. What a thrill and a keeper of a memory! These are just a few of the many fabulous auction items. Place a bid yourself or plan a bid with a group of friends and bag a big one for more bang for your buck!

There’s no monkeying around when it comes to the bid board. Make tracks, hunt the big game, make your bid, and yell like Tarzan when your bid wins!

The mission of the Fort Bend Education Foundation is to enrich, enhance and maximize the quality of education for all FBISD students. Since its inception in 1992, the Education Foundation has awarded over $2.1 million in grants to FBISD teachers and schools. Foundation programs include the Grants for the Teachers and Schools Program, Grants for the Experts Program, and Angel Gifts. The Gala is the primary source of revenue to fund these programs.

Don’t miss the Fort Bend Education Foundation’s “In the Jungle” Gala. For more information on the Gala or the Education Foundation, please call Brenna Smelley, Executive Director, at 281-634-1113 or visit the website at www.fortbendisd.com/foundation.

Schlumberger Education Expedition

The 6th annual Education Expedition will take place on Saturday, March 28th. We promise to provide you with a quality ride whether you are training for that all-important BP MS 150 or just wanting a great day with friends. The Schlumberger Education Expedition ride begins at Hightower High School and winds throughout quiet streets and into the countryside, before looping back home.

The routes are designed to minimize busy intersections while providing a smooth and scenic ride. This BP MS 150 recommended ride offers three routes (80 miles, 52 miles, and 38 miles). Water stations are staffed by volunteers from local schools and they will be vying for the Best Water Station award. Be prepared to be entertained along this route!

We begin at 7:15 am sharp and hope you will register online (www.fortbendisd.com/foundation) before event day to prevent any distractions for you on ride morning. SAG wagons will be on the course to assist you with any needs.

Be prepared to stay and enjoy lunch with your friends after the ride. We are providing a scrumptious lunch and entertainment! This is one ride you don’t want to miss!

For more information, contact Lisa Kulhanek at 281.634.1110 or visit our website at www.fortbendisd.com/foundation.

Angels of Education Auxiliary

The Fort Bend Education Foundation is pleased to welcome the following Auxiliary Officers: Stacy Bynes, Vice President – Special Projects; Pat Houck, FBEF Board Vice President – Community Relations; Betsy de Vega, Vice President – Recruiting; and Beatriz DeAlvardo, President; not pictured Kelli King-Jackson, Vice President – Publicity. The Angels of Education Auxiliary supports the Fort Bend Education Foundation by providing volunteers and creating community awareness.

Angel Gifts

First year teachers, starting a teaching career, will automatically receive a gift from the Education Foundation as part of the Angel Gifts program. These gift certificates are in the amount of $150 and can be used at a local teacher supply store. For the 2008-2009 school year the Fort Bend Education Foundation provided $36,291 in gift cards to first year teachers.

Grants to Teachers and Schools Program

Each year the Fort Bend Education Foundation provides grants to teachers and schools. The purpose of the grants is to enhance, promote and augment classroom instruction in areas not allotted in regular budgetary funds or not eligible for reimbursement from other sources.

Students benefit from projects that emphasize new approaches to teaching and innovative programs that stimulate thought and expand the existing curriculum. Teachers benefit because funding is available to subsidize their creative ideas. Our community benefits by having a top-quality educational system that impacts not only the quality of life but also economic development.

This year the Foundation received 328 grant requests. Grant applications are currently being reviewed and winners will be notified by mid-April. There will be a grants award ceremony in May.
